Welcome to Medford Area Middle School! I’m excited to start my first year as principal at the middle school. I served MAMS the last two years as the assistant principal and know it is a wonderful place for learning for all students in grades 5-8. Before joining MAMS, I taught for 22 years at both the 5th and 6th grade levels, serving on numerous committees, coaching middle school volleyball, high school softball, and working as a referee for volleyball.
I look forward to this new opportunity and working with staff to continue the MAMS tradition of excellence.
This year we are introducing our “Away for the Day” cell phone policy. With the dramatic increase in anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns, bullying incidents, and distraction from learning, the school board unanimously approved a policy change to help students focus on their main school task of learning. We’ve strengthened the policy over the summer to include Yondr pouches for all student communication devices during our instructional day. Students can carry the pouches with them throughout the day and unlock them at one of the stations when they leave the building at the end of the day. I hope that this will help students connect socially, allow students to focus on learning, and encourage everyone to live a life that is not dependent on technology for engaging in activities.
Our goals at MAMS are to Be Responsible, Be Respectful, and Be Positive. These goals are in place to work toward our commitment to the community to help produce productive, helpful, and happy citizens in the future. Being responsible means more than just completing homework. It means being involved in activities, taking initiative in new roles, and challenging ourselves to do our best work in everything we do. Being respectful is especially important in our middle school years as the person we are usually the most disrespectful toward is ourselves. Helping students understand that respect for themselves, their minds, abilities, and feelings, will extend beyond themselves and impact others. Lastly, maintaining a positive attitude and outlook in all we do will help us persevere through the hard moments that life brings. Being able to persevere when learning gets tough, when friendships hit the skids, and when things aren’t working the way they thought is a life skill. We look forward to another year of helping all of our students do their best at achieving their goals.
